Overworked & Undervalued? Why Women Must Stop Treating Burnout as a Badge of Honor

Writer: Jo Anne MangampoJo Anne Mangampo
Exhaustion is NOT a Flex

Somewhere along the way, women were taught that being tired, overworked, and stretched too thin was just “part of the process” of success.

🔹 We’re told to be twice as good to get half as much.

🔹 We’re expected to carry the load for everyone—at work and at home.

🔹 We normalize stress, exhaustion, and burnout as signs of ambition.

🚨 But let’s be clear: Burnout is NOT the price of success. Your career should feel fulfilling—not like survival.

So how did we get here? And more importantly—how do we flip the script?

The Real Reason Women Are Burning Out at Record Rates

💡 Burnout rates among women are at an all-time high. According to LeanIn & McKinsey’s 2023 Women in the Workplace study, women are more likely to feel overworked, undervalued, and unsupported in leadership roles.

💡 Women are more likely to take on “invisible work.” Studies show that women take on more unpaid emotional labor, office “housework,” and DEI initiatives—while still trying to climb the ladder (Harvard Business Review, 2023).

💡 We’re working harder—but not getting the same returns. Despite having higher degrees, stronger performance, and better leadership skills, women still face slower promotions and lower pay raises than their male peers.

🔥 And yet, we still push through. But at what cost?

Three Career Shifts Women Must Make to Break Free from Burnout

1️⃣ Stop Treating Overwork as a Success Strategy

❌ Being the hardest worker in the room is not the flex they made it seem.

✔ Instead of doing more, focus on doing what moves you forward.

✔ Start saying NO to work that doesn’t serve your goals.

2️⃣ Demand What You Deserve—Not Just What’s Offered

❌ Stop waiting for a promotion. Start positioning yourself NOW.

✔ Ask for leadership roles, higher pay, and decision-making opportunities.

✔ If they don’t pay you what you’re worth, go where they will.

3️⃣ Set Boundaries Like Your Career Depends on It—Because It Does

❌ Your time, energy, and peace are non-negotiable.

✔ Protect your calendar, prioritize self-care, and stop apologizing for having limits.

✔ Rest is productive. A well-rested woman is a powerful one.
